HMS Resolute Desk is a hand-carved humidor that was created as a faithful replica of the iconic "Resolute Desk" from the Oval Office of the White House. This symbol of American presidency has an extraordinary origin: it refers to the desk gifted by Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880, made from the oak timbers of the ship HMS Resolute.

Why this humidor is exceptional

  • Limited to only 10 pieces – an extremely rare edition intended for collectors.
  • Hand-carved craftsmanship – the manual production of the humidor takes approximately 1 year of work!
  • The humidor is fitted with a solid brass plaque on top - a copy of the identical plaque found on the Resolute Desk.
  • The brass plate inside the humidor is identical to the brass plate on the Resolute Desk and tells the "story" of the desk.
  • The brass plate on the front of the humidor tells the "story" of the humidor.

A story and legacy that has endured for generations

The abbreviation HMS stands for Her Majesty's Ship (in the king's time it would be His Majesty's Ship) and is the traditional designation for ships of the British Royal Navy. HMS Resolute was a British exploration ship that set out in 1852 to search for the lost polar expedition of Sir John Franklin. It then became trapped in ice and was abandoned by its crew in 1854. Subsequently, it broke free on its own and drifted 1200 nautical miles (= about 2200 km) without a crew before being discovered by an American whaler in 1855. This is why it is also nicknamed the "ghost ship". The American government bought the ship from the whalers, had it repaired, and in 1856 returned it to Queen Victoria as a gesture of friendship (relations between the USA and Britain were very tense at the time). After its decommissioning "from service", Queen Victoria had three desks made from the ship's wood - one writing desk for her private yacht, one smaller desk was received by the widow of Henry Grinnell, who financed American search missions for Franklin. The third desk, the "Resolute Desk", was presented in 1880 to the President of the USA - Rutherford B. Hayes. Today, the "Resolute Desk" is one of the most famous symbols of the Oval Office and the White House.
